Published by in PI Hiring Tips and Advice · 8 May 2018
If you're thinking should you hire a private investigator then you will already have some idea, even the slightest, that one can help you. But maybe you're not sure how?

Well, there are lots of reasons to hire a private investigator whether for a personal or business matter. A private investigator is often very useful for a number of reasons, but when a case or claim is necessary in a court of law, these professionals are invaluable.

The purpose of an investigator, or private detective, is to help businesses or individuals uncover or find information that's not always easy to find. Should you hire an investigator; you will get the benefit of the investigator’s knowledge, skill, and expertise.

The need for knowledge about certain subjects often demands that someone is experienced in how to obtain that knowledge. The skills of a private investigator are usually greatly superior to those of even educated persons. Because of the potential negative consequences of wrongly obtaining information, it is often recommended that you should hire a private investigator – a professional who has the expertise and know-how in revealing various and sometimes crucial elements of a case. Should surveillance of an area be required, investigators have many hours in training and experience to provide those services.

Should I Hire a Private Investigator or Do My Own Investigation?

Here are some important points to consider should you not hire an investigator but decide to conduct your own surveillance or investigations.

    • Investigators have the capability of completing assignments legally; they can conduct discreet surveillance for extended periods without being discovered, and can uncover information that may be hidden or unavailable through the usual search methods.

    • Should you not hire a private investigator for surveillance but decide to conduct your own – without proper training – can cause the person or organization to discover they are being watched. This can lead to complications such as; possible legal action to cease the surveillance. If the person being watched was conducting illegal activities, they will usually stop doing so until they know for sure no one is watching.

    • It is important to ensure that legal compliance is met at all times during an investigation. There are extensive fines as well as jail-time for untrained or unlicensed persons carrying out investigations that break the law.

    • If evidence is collected incorrectly, and in the case of court action the judge disallows the evidence to be presented in court because it wasn’t obtained correctly or legally, it becomes a waste of your time and money.

    • Testifying in court comes with the practice and experience of legal procedures. Getting it wrong will damage your case if you don’t know courtroom etiquette and what to expect. A private investigator should know how to conduct them self in courtroom situations. They will look clean and professional in appearance and conduct them self appropriately, giving clear and concise testimony.

When Should I Hire a Private Investigator?

Depending on what your case is about and what your intention is, is a significant part of deciding when and if you should hire the services of a private investigator – particularly for court actions. If court action is intended then speaking with an attorney first is a wise choice before you use an investigator. An attorney will determine whether a private investigator is worth hiring or not – simply because using one may not be needed.

There are times when even the best evidence collected by a private detective will not be useful in court proceedings. One example would be; if an adulterous partner doesn’t earn enough money to be considered the supporting partner - for the purposes of alimony - then presenting evidence to the court proving adultery may not be necessary. So you shouldn’t need to hire a private investigator in this instance.

If you simply want to find someone or have a background check done on someone then you should hire a private investigator, and the need for attorney consultation won’t be necessary.

Why Should I Hire a Private Investigator?

So maybe you’re convinced that you should hire a private investigator, but what can they do for you? What services can you use them for?

Maybe. Hiring a private investigator to follow your girlfriend (or boyfriend for that matter) is not the same as hiring one to follow a marital partner. There are exceptions however such as in a common law marriage. Ask a private investigator first to see where you stand.
